1. In the subs I have, Marion's dad is called 'John', but in Japanese it's written as ジャン (Jan) instead of ジョン (Jon). If it were actually John, it'd be written as the latter, but since it's 'jan', I figured it was actually the French Jean and that's what I go with. There's also a female character named Jean/Jeane. Male Jean is voiced by Sugawara Jun'ichi, female Jean is Okamoto Nami. 2. Episodes 1-26 are called Kaleido Star, 27 and onward are actually titled Kaleido Star: Aratanaru Tsubasa (New Wings) 3. Anna's two comedy group friends are named Hanna and Barbara. It took me until the very last episode (because I am slow) to realize that their names are a play on/homage to Hanna-Barbera, the cartoon studio that made such shows as The Flinstones, Yogi Bear, Tom & Jerry, etc. etc. (When they first appeared, I didn't think anything more than "'baabera' is an odd Japanese spelling for 'Barbara'...wouldn't it be 'baabara'"? 4. The ending for the final episode, Yakusoku no Basho e, is sung by Yonekura Chihiro with Kaleido Stars. Kaleido Stars is made up of Hirohashi Ryou, Oohara Sayaka, Nishimura Chinami, Watanabe Akeno, and Mizuhashi Kaori. (*is glad that May isn't part of the group* >D) 5. Layla's maid, who was just labeled as 'maid' throughout the series, gets the name 'makkorii' in the first OAV. A quick search on Google Japan lists some university in Australia and also McAuley as a possible romanization. Unless McAuley is the maid's last name, (and I don't think Layla would refer to her most loyal maid by her last name), then I'd feel sorry for any girl with that name. So I went with the name of the Australian university instead, because it looks nicer >_> Hopefully it doesn't mean something weird but obvious to Australians. 6. The bicycle chick Layla meets in the Phoenix OAV is named 'ryuu'. WTF. I can't think of a single name that an American woman would likely have that could be written in Japanese like that, so it's Lou, goddammit, which is the closest thing I can think of that works. 7. At the end of the Phoenix OAV, you see that Layla's mother's name is spelled 'Rola' ...... ...............for obvious reasons, I made it 'Lora' in the cast list. |
